Past Women’s Div I VB Champions

Nebraska just finished off beating Texas for the 2015 Women’s Division I NCAA National Volleyball Championship and we though it would be good to look back at some previous winners of the tournament title.

  • 2015 – Nebraska
  • 2014 – Penn State
  • 2013 – Penn State
  • 2012 – Texas
  • 2011 – UCLA
  • 2010 – Penn State
  • 2009 – Penn State
  • 2008 – Penn State
  • 2007 – Penn State
  • 2006 – Nebraska
  • 2005 – Washington
  • 2004 – Stanford
  • 2003 – USC
  • 2002 – USC
  • 2001 – Stanford
  • 2000 – Nebraska
  • 1999 – Penn State
  • 1998 – Long Beach State
  • 1997 – Stanford
  • 1996 – Stanford

The B10 has really dominated the sport lately.  That hasn’t really been the case in NCAA basketball though. Can Michigan State break that trend this year?  Vegas has them as the favorite to win the NCAA tournament at 6/1. And, of course they couldn’t.  The Spartans were upset in the first round while Villanova played their hearts out and cut the nets down.

There have been quite a few teams that finished the season off undefeated.  That is quite an accomplishment in this sport when you have to grind through nearly 40 games on your way to a title.

The undefeateds are:

  • 2009 – Penn State
  • 2008 – Penn State
  • 2003- USC
  • 2000 – Nebraska
  • 1998 – Long Beach State

If you are looking down the list you can see that some teams have really dominated the sport of NCAA volleyball.  Let’s take a look at the teams with the most titles:

  • Penn State (7)
  • Stanford (6)
  • UCLA (4)
  • Nebraska (4)
  • Hawaii (3)
  • Long Beach State (3)
  • USC (3)

What’s interesting to note is that Penn State has won seven times, but has lost in the title three times.  Stanford on the other hand “only” has six titles, but they were beat in the finals a record eight times!
